here get away. in your own Well everybody Welcome to Prairie Lakes Church this week and I'm delighted that you are here whether you're joining from one of our physical campuses all across Iowa or online campus all across Iowa and Beyond We Are One Church on many corners and we're delighted that you are here this weekend at Prairie Lakes church, and I love a little bit of Pink Floyd and I tell you what that song money has one of the most iconic baselines in the history of music and years ago in my son Xavier started to learn how to play bass. It was that song and then it was the Seinfeld riff and many of you already know. I'm talking about the bow, if you don't know what that is Google Seinfeld kids. It's an awesome show. Okay.

I promise it's really really good. All right, let's let's dive in together this weekend. This is week two of our series called upside down and we're talking about how our priorities and planning in our lives sometimes gets disordered and we find ourselves upside down in different areas of our lives and our lives don't look the way we want them to which causes stress and it causes struggle now, This series we're not just going to in a depressing way. Look at all the things that are broken in our lives. We're actually going to provide some context for why things get upside down and how to get right side up and so last week we started the series by talking about over consuming.

Next week, we're going to talk about over scheduling but this week we get to talk about your favorite topic to top talk about a church and mine it is this it's upside down when we overspend we overspend when our budgets aren't right more specifically this week and we're going to talk about debt but what happens when we over overspend often and we find ourselves upside down in our finances when more goes out than more comes in or to put it a different way when we have more months then we have money now. I want to begin with a confession this weekend. You ready? I hate amusement parks.

And I hate amusement park rides. I don't like heights. I don't like flipping around upside down. I don't like Thrills. I don't like to pay money to feel like I'm dying. So if you want to watch me slowly die inside take me to an amusement park and it will work every single time and recently I watched the movie Top Gun Maverick and you know, the Jets like flying upside down and moving around even sitting in my living room. I was kind of like like feeling queasy because I don't physically like the feeling of being upside down.

And as is comfortable as I get when I'm upside down physically being upside down financially I think is even worse. Where you feel trapped? Stuck. Are you really worried about money all the time? And I've been there personally and it's an awful place to be and so I'm gonna share with you this weekend some some tips some strategies to get yourself right side up with money. Okay, and some of you may be wondering right now, why is a pastor who's not a money expert? Why is a church? Why are we spending a whole weekend talking about money? Why would we do that? Well, here's why it's really important.

Money fights and money problems are one of the main causes of divorce. Money problems lead to all kinds of stress and anxiety in our lives debt limits our ability to give generously to God and give generously to others and debt often drives us to work way too much or to say the wrong yeses in our careers.

I've talked to so many people as a pastor who they take a promotion because it pays more but it means less time with family. It means less time to do the things they love it means more travel all because they want to have more stuff or pay off stuff. They already have we start to make decisions based on dead and usually they're not the right kinds of decisions and hey parents.

How you live with money has a direct impact on your kids and their financial future. They're gonna model their financial lives often After You For Better or For Worse. So this topic really really matters. Now as we begin this weekend, I want to talk about American culture and debt and here's why being upside down financially is the air we breathe in America today. We are simultaneously the most wealthy nation in the world and the most broke we have the opportunity in American today to win with money unlike any other time in the history of the world and we have more pitfalls in our culture today in America than at any other time that would cause us to fail when it comes to money. It's a strange Paradox. So I'm gonna give you some stats. They're gonna make you feel really really good about America. Okay ready? So here's the first place that you can go. It's the www.us debt clock.org and you will see our national debt and all these statistics before you and the tickers run and all the time and here's what it will reveal right now. Our national debt is 31.6 trillion dollars with the tea trillion, which is 95,000 for every person.

Live in America today including the people that were just born this week. Okay, 95,000 per person. That is insane. And here's some other stats that will just kind of depress you but just show you how much we are in debt the average car payment in America $730 a month.

And some of you have two or three. Credit card debt in America hit a record in March 930 billion dollars and 45% of those making more than a hundred thousand dollars a year are living paycheck to paycheck. They're perilously close to being upside down with money people that make six figures a year that is crazy. And I point all those things out to you to say this in order to live right side up financially in America today. You have to be weird.

You have to swim upstream. You have to be abnormal. Dave Ramsey says this all the time the financial Guru. He says normal is broke. So be weird with money and if you're gonna win with money and be right side up, you have to live your life differently than the majority of the people around you. Now pastors Jesse said something last week that I want to revisit about this topic and just about being upside down when it comes to feeling upside down. It's pretty discouraging but it's pretty common. We have a tendency to hide it or hide from it because there's no easy fix but there's always a way through in a way out and I need you to believe that today.

If you're a spot right now where you're drowning in debt where you're completely upside down where you're stressed and panicked about money, and maybe you're in debt all the way up to your eyeballs and you're like, I don't see hope. I want you to know that there is hope and there is freedom. There is a way out you can be right side up and win with money and here's the formula on how to do that. They're going to talk about this weekend.

Getting right side up with money or winning with money means that we have three things the right priorities the right plan and the right tools. If you want to win with money get right side of the money you have to have the right priorities the right plan and the right tools and here's what I mean when it comes to priorities if you're priorities, I want more I want the newest the latest the greatest You're Gonna Lose with money. But if you priority is I want to honor God and I want to pursue contentment you can win.

You have to have a plan. You can't wing it with money. Hope is a terrible strategy when it comes to managing money and living financially sound. So you have to have a plan and you have to have the right tools that are going to get you along the path of that plan. And that's we're going to talk about this weekend. But before we talk about priorities and plans and tools.

I want to talk briefly about a Theology of debt. What does the Bible say about debt? And here's why I want to do this. I want to do this because there's a lot of really good wisdom of Truth in the Bible. Number one, but number two we get so used to and accustomed to having debt in our lives today that we feel like it's acceptable and normal and good.

But the Bible paints a very different picture of what debt is and what it's like to be upside down financially. So here's an overview broad stroke of what the Bible teaches about being upside down or being in debt. It's this debt equals slavery lack of that equals freedom. So if you're to boil down the whole Bible and say what does the Bible say about that? It's this that dead equals slavery and lack of that equals freedom.

And there's one verse that I draw this from primarily and it's this Proverbs 22:7. It says the rich rule over the poor and the borrower is slave to the lender. The borrower is slave to the lender and I don't know about you, but I don't want to be a slave to anybody. I don't want to be enslaved by anyone and Proverbs 27 says that when we borrow we become slaves or Servants of those we borrow from whether it's discover or Visa or apple or Sally May or our parents or our bank or Credit Union.

And if you're upside down with money right now, you know, this is exactly how that feels. It feels like a weight around your neck that you just carry around all the time. It feels very debilitating sometimes. And those of you that have paid off that know the freedom of having options of where money goes and you get to decide where it goes and they don't get to tell you how much interest you're gonna pay any more. It's very very freeing.

Here's why the Bible? Describes debt being slavery is such a big deal. See God's people prior to when God gave the law for 430 years. They were slaves in Egypt and they serve pharaoh and God delivered them and released them and Moses brought to people right up to the doorstep of the promised land the land that they would enter and they were free.

For the first time in hundreds of years. And God didn't want his people to be in financial bondage and financial slavery. He wanted them to be free because he had redeemed them. So I'm going to show you how God wove released of debt freedom from debt into the very fabric of the Old Testament law. So bear with me here, we're gonna look at Deuteronomy 15 a place. We don't often go in the scriptures and in Deuteronomy chapter 15 verse 1, here's what the Bible says.

At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts, and this is how it's to be done. Every creditor shall cancel any loan. They've made with a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from any one of their own people because the Lord's time for canceling the debts has been proclaimed. Imagine this no matter how much debt you had no matter how much you borrowed every seven years. It gets completely released.

You're back to square one no more debt. You're free like awesome, right? They'd be beautiful. But then in verse 9 he says this but but be careful not to Harbor this wicked thought well the seventh year is near so that you show ill will toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing then they may appeal to the Lord against you and you will be found guilty of sin, but give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart then because this because because of the this then the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and everything you put your hand to so God say not only does every seven years mean a cancellation of debt, but if you are seeing one of your fellow brothers and sisters in need and it's like you're six and you know that if you lend to them next year that that's gonna be wiped out lend to them. Anyways give to them anyways.

And then in verse 12, he says this. And if any of your people Hebrew men or women sell themselves to you and they serve you six years in the seventh year. You must let them go free and when you release them do not send them away empty-handed see thousands of years ago. This would happen. If you had a debt that you couldn't pay you could make yourselves an indentured servant or a slave to that person or that family to pay off the debt that you owed and here in God's word. He's saying hey, that's fine.

But if someone's serving you to pay off a debt and year seven no matter how much they owe you clean. The Slate wipe it clean release them from how much they owe you no matter how much it is and Give them food and clothing on the way out the door. To make sure you care for the people around you.

Now, why would God do this? Here's verse 15. Look what it says. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you that is why I give you this command today. God says hey, that's not good. I don't want my people to be in bed. I don't want generational debt among my people because I've redeemed you. I've purchased you. I've bought you you belong to me. So don't live in slavery and don't enslave your brothers or sisters live free live free.

Then in Leviticus chapter 25, there's this thing called the year Jubilee where every seven sevens so a cycle of 7 7 49 years the 50th year was the year Jubilee you're celebration where if your family had original land in the promised land no matter how much debt you had no matter who you sold that land to the property would revert back to the primary land owner so that there wouldn't be generational poverty and generational debt in Israel. God wove that in the fabric of the Old Testament law because he wanted his people to be free and then in the New Testament we get to Jesus and The Parables of Jesus in the Gospels.

And in The Parables of Jesus, he tells about debt in the gospels. The goal is always freedom from debt. The goal is never to acquire that it's freedom from dead and Jesus tells a lot of Parables about debt or about generosity. He tells a parable of the unmerful servant where this man was forgiven an unimaginable amount of debt and then he turned around and didn't forgive someone that owed him a very small amount he tells the parable of the shrewd manager was Jesus says you can't serve God or money. He talks about being generous a lot because he wants us to be free and to give freely and remember that Jesus for those of us that are in Christ step over the faith line. Jesus has paid the debt of our sin so that we can be free to love him and serve him and he doesn't want us to be in bondage to death.

He doesn't want us to be in financial slavery because he's paid our debts. And then lastly here's Paul in Romans 13 talking about debt and freedom from it. He says give to everyone what you own if you own taxes pay your taxes. If you'll Revenue than Revenue if you'll respect and respect if honored and honor and look what he says, let no debt remain outstanding except the continuing debt to love one another whoever love others has fulfilled the law Paul's like hey get out of that. It's not good. It's bondage don't stay in debt pay off your debts because the only debt you should have in this life is that you have to love people because Jesus has loved you. So if you're building a Theology of that that five minute summary, it's back to this point again. The Bible says that dead is slavery and a lack of debt is freedom and some of you're like, okay pastor. Hey, I've got business debt or Farm debt, or I've got a mortgage like am I sinning? No, no, no those things generally appreciate and go up in value. And as long as you're right side up in those things and you've got to responsible amount of mortgage Farm or business debt, that's actually serving.

You that's okay. The kind of that we're talking about here is like Consumer Debt, whether it be student loans or credit cards or vehicle loans or or a bank loans that are just a weight around your neck things that depreciate value things that don't have any value that you owe money on. That's what I'm talking about.

Now here's what we spend the rest of our time talking about this weekend. Three approaches to spending three different plans of how people and you may identify your own in this how we approach finances and how we approach money. I'm gonna give you two approaches two plans that will get you upside down with money and one that will help you win with money and be right side up now.

As I say all of that, here's the caveat. Listen, I know that for some of us. Life has happened. For some of us we have really good Financial plans and we get sideswiped job loss. divorce Cancer like I know that for some of you listening right now, you're like hey life is kind of kicked me around financially and I understand that that those things happen. Okay, so I'm not trying to add any guilt or shame or any kind of weight to you. If you're in one of those spots right now know I've got compassion for you God's got compassion for you and and Even in the midst of that difficulty you can find a way out. God can lead you out of that. Okay, but but right now I need you to know I'm primarily talking to the 95% of people.

who could be prosperous who could be right side up if they simply had the right plan the right priorities and the right tools and so here are the first two plans are gonna look at the first one is this it's what I call the 120 plan. Some people when they approach money in finances, they've got this 120 plan and here's what the 120 plan is you live off of more than you have and maybe it's the 110 plan to the 130 plan. But you're spending 120% of what you bring in every month or maybe a hundred ten or thirty percent and the numbers in your budget. Simply do not add up you are by definition upside down and if you're in the 120 plan here is your priority. It's consumerism.

I want to get what I haven't earned and I want to live like all the people around me. And here's your plan. I want to live above my means by living off of credit and or loans if you're on the 120 plan, and I know a lot of you listen to me right now are and you're starting to feel a little bit convicted because you spend money like our federal government.

And you're trying to have a certain Lifestyle the latest the greatest bigger newer faster better and you're spending all kinds of money. On things that you shouldn't be spending money on you're spending more than you have. Dave Ramsey's got a great quote for people that live on the 120 plane.

He says this we buy things we don't need with money. We don't have to impress people. We don't like that great. We buy things we don't need with money. We don't have to impress people. We don't even like And if you're on the 120 plan right now, here's what you need to know. If you don't check this plan. If you don't check your desires and your priorities and your plan, the trajectory is just more and more and more more greed more discontentment more debt more out of control spending more feeling like you're enslaved to your finances and more being upside down because this plan will bankrupt you quick.

And you can't live on this plan too long without facing Financial ruin and struggle and I've met with so many people who are in this spot. You feel completely helpless. They maxed out credit cards. They defaulted on loans. They're facing eviction and it just feels like the walls of Life are closing in on you.

And so I just want to encourage you if you're in this spot where you're going like hey, that's my plan. That's my financial priority right now. I want to encourage you to examine where you're at and how you live in with money and take this as an opportunity to challenge yourself to change and to grow even if it's just a little bit this weekend. That's the 120 plan.

That plan does not work. It'll get you upside down. Here's the other plan that will also get you upside down. I call the question mark plan the question mark play with money and finances and you're like, what's the question mark plan? Well, the question mark plan is a life financially random and unplanned. Ignorance is bliss you start seeing bills could show up in the mail and you're like how did that show up?

Like what like you look at your credit card bill, you're like, I don't remember eating all of those meals at the those restaurants and you're completely unaware of what you're spending what you're earning or what you're accumulating and here's the priority implant. If you're on the question mark plan, your priority is convenience and ignorance. It's better. If I don't know.

I just don't want to look. And the plan is to purposely not have a plan. You live random unplanned not strategic. There is no focus in your financial life. It's just I'm just going to kind of get by like budget. Oh yuck. Financial goals. Not not for me getting out of debt. Nah, I'll always said that it's not that big a deal right and some of you you've got plenty of income income is not your problem.

And you don't have crazy amounts of debt, but you're not winning with money because you're aimless. You're like a ship without a Rudder. You're like a hiker without a map. Like you just don't know where you're going and this plan can also bankrupt you quick. And this question mark plan. It will not fix itself because hope is not a strategy for your finances.

I talk to people all the time. Great jobs fantastic incomes, but they're struggling with money because either they're they're spousing them are not on the same page. They don't have a plan. They're priorities. I just want to do the easy thing or the convenient thing and they really do struggle with money and I got to tell you this.

Perhaps the greatest problem with the question mark plan. Is that if you're living on this plan, you're missing out on opportunities to honor God with money and prosper with money. That the abilities there the desire just isn't there yet, right. It's sometimes we just simply aren't good stewards of God's money. We could have Prosperity but we don't listen my wife Amy and I when we were in our 20s, we live this this question mark plan. We weren't in Crazy amounts of debt, like things weren't completely crazy and we didn't feel suffocated but we weren't winning with money because we had no plan.

And our priority was kind of like don't have a budget don't really look it'll just kind of all work out. God will make it all work out right and now listen in our 40s now. We're not as prosperous as we should be. Because we made mistakes in our 20s. We bought two houses. We shouldn't have bought we didn't have a budget. We didn't have a plan. We weren't living on purpose financially and and it cost us now. Here's why the 120 plan and the question mark plan don't work.

In first Timothy chapter 6 verses 6 through 10 Paul writes these words to a young Pastor named Timothy. And the first line of this passage is gold. He says this. Godliness with contentment is great gain. Godliness with contentment is great. Gain. Paul says, hey Timothy. Here's the thing. If you live a Godly life, if you've got Godly priorities, if you're focused on following him being obedient to him first and you pursue contentment with what you have. You'll have it all like that's great gain. Those are the priorities that's the way to win is to say I'm gonna pursue God and oh by the way, I'm gonna be content with what I have and then he says this for we brought nothing into the world and we can take nothing out of it. He's like, hey Timothy you showed up on this world naked and by the way, there's no U-Hauls behind hearses ever right like you can't deal with you.

He says but if we have food and clothing will be content with that for those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and Destruction for look at this verse 10. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil and some people eager for money if wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Paul says Hey loving money making money and possessions and comfort and ease and ignorance making those things the priority least the financial ruin and even has let people walk away from the faith. But godliness with contentment is great gain presuming God pursuing Jesus being content with what you have is great gain, which is a part of the last plan that I want to give you the plan that will help you win with money.

The plan is called this the 10 1080 plan. Okay, give 10% save 10% spend 80% that is a very simple rough model. There are lots of variations of the 10 1080 plan. Okay, so there's the there's the 10 10 1565 where you give 10% to God you save 10 you invest 15 you spend 65. There's the 10 270 plan where you give 10 save 20 spin 70 my wife and I were on the 12 25 63 plan. Right? Like there's different plans. You can be on but the big idea with this plan is this here's the plan and here's the priority with the 10 1080 plant that I want to show you right here.

It's this the priority is to pursue contentment and honor God was money. That's the goal. The plan is I'm going to live within my financial means This is the pathway to Prosperity the pursue contentment honor God with money and the plan is I'm gonna live within my financial means I'm not gonna overspend. I'm Not Gonna Keep accumulating stuff. I don't need I'm not gonna I'm going to live within my current limits. One of the things pastors said last week. That was so clarifying as he said, sometimes we need to learn to say that's enough.

And living within your means financially means that you learn to say that's enough. Hey, I've got two cars. They get me from point A to point B. I don't care what names on them because two cars that work that's enough. Hey, I got a decent house. And yeah, I could afford a bigger house, but I'm gonna live within my means because I don't need more bedrooms and I don't need more bathrooms to clean. My house is enough. It could be simply saying One Vacation a year is enough or the clothes that I have right now that is enough. It's learning to be content with what you have. It's learning to live within the means that God has given you Now I know right now some of you are like hey, I am financially a mess.

So I can't do the 10 1080 plan right now. You might be that that's great the plan for you right now might be one zero ninety nine because you're like I need to get out of debt first. Yeah, great. The 10 1080 plant is something to Aspire to and work towards so if you're in a spot right now, we're like I can't do that you you can eventually it's something to work towards that's the goal to prosper with finances and be right side up.

And listen, I know that for some of you you've been listening this entire message and you're like, yep, you're not along you're like I've been doing it. I've been doing it. I've been doing it, but I want to remind you today that even if you're on the 1080 plan or the 1027 plan, you're living within your means that hey friend God cares about what you do with the 70% or the 80% God cares how you spend his money and what you're doing with it. So maybe for you if you're already living out this plan God speaking you right now and he's saying hey you need to reevaluate how you're spending and you're Current financial priorities. Even if you're right set up and even if you're winning with money, right so that may be your step this weekend. So here's the question. We're gonna answer.

With the last five minutes we got together this weekend. What practical tools do we use to get to the 1080 plan? How do we practically get right side up with money? How do we honor God? How do we live within our means I'm gonna give you four helpful tools. And here's the first one get on a budget get on a budget and stick to it. I am blown away when I meet with people about how many people don't have any kind of family budget or individual budget. They really have no idea what they're bringing in what's going out. They just know I survived the month you need to get on a budget assessment is crucial. If you're gonna win with money, you have to face the brutal reality of your finances. It's just like when you want to lose weight two things motivate you to lose weight stepping on the scale and doing it before picture. Those things will motivate you.

Having a brutal look at your finances should should motivate you to change and one of the best things you can do is get on a budget. There are two resources. I want to point you to with a budget that are really important. The first is you go to Ramsey solutions.com. That's Dave Ramsey's website. They've got an app called to every dollar app. There's a free version and a paid version but the every dollar app is a great way to track your spending and if you're a paper person you can print off sheets and do templates too. Okay, so you digitally or analog either way, it's a great great app.

Another great app is mint. I use mint because it sinks all of my accounts all together. It tracks my spending. I can see Trends I can see where I'm at. It's an awesome. Awesome thing and listen when you have a budget. Have a regular budget meeting with yourself or your spouse or your family where you sit down weekly or monthly you review your spending you look at potential pitfalls coming up or expenditures coming up and you can say how am I doing this week?

How did I do that month and you can celebrate wins and you can tweak your budget as you need to but having a budget is huge. It's huge. That's tool number one. Here's tool number two to win with money and get right side find coaching and accountability from others who win with money. Who do you know that wins with money?

Who do you know that honors god with money and his right side up. It has a lot of peace and prosperity find that person whether it's a friend a small group member a financial advisor some sort of accountability and just say hey, I need to pick your brain. How do you do it? Help me understand how you win with money and honor God with money.

Well the greatest ways to do this is a class called Financial Peace University f p u some of our campuses offer it during the year some don't but here's the thing online Ramsey solutions.com. You can join an online FPU class at about any point when they start they're eight weeks. I think it's like 80 bucks to take the class. And here's the thing the average FPU attendee in graduate pays off their Consumer Debt in two years.

They are free from debt into years. My wife and I started Living out those principles about 13 years ago, and it completely transformed our finances but accountability from other people in your life that know your financial goals that can hold you to them is really really important so find somebody.

That can keep you accountable and help you out take him out to lunch and just pick their brain and say hey, how did you get out of debt? Help me out? And hey for some of you right now listening again. You may be like, hey, I'm living good. I'm right side up. I don't have a lot of debt. I don't have any debt. Like I'm living in a good spot and and great for you. But hey, maybe this whole message for you was to encourage and challenge you to look for somebody in your little Iowa that you can encourage and keep accountable and help financially. Maybe that's why God has you hearing this message right now so that you can be this person and someone else's life. That's tool number two. Here's tool number three set goals and benchmarks. It's great to have Godly priorities with money to say I'm gonna live with them my means I've got enough I'm gonna be content and then to say oh and by the way, I'm gonna live on a plan and the plans to live within my means, that's awesome. But unless you have goals and benchmarks. It's really difficult to get from where you are to where you want to be. So the best things you can do is say here's goal one. Here's goal two, here's goal three and keep setting goals writing them down put in a places where you're gonna see them like in your car or your fridge or your mirror and saying here's my goal and then counting down as you make progress. That is so huge.

Because if you aim at nothing, you're going to hit it every single time. So maybe your goal is I'm gonna pay off a credit card by December 1st. Write it down. I'm gonna start giving 5% of my income by August or maybe you're gonna have a budget in place by May 1st. Whatever it is, write it down. Make it your goal make it visible. And then here's the thing when you hit that goal.
