here Prairie Lakes Church, welcome we are very very glad that you were here. And let's just say this. This is an early Christmas present from us to know. Oh, yes. Oh it's incredible for you because you don't just get one Prairie Lakes Church teaching Pastor you get to what a blessing to you. So how lucky are you? Yeah this week. Yeah. We are excited. We honestly really we're excited about what we're doing this weekend because here's where we're going after you tolerate us for 30 minutes, you're gonna see at your campus a group of people that were and we've never done this before no pretty lakes. Okay, you're gonna see a group of people that we're gonna commission and we'll tell you more about that. But these are people who have walked through a membership class one walk through membership class. Number two been through an affirmation interview and you're gonna hear their stories of how they're praying and who they're praying for and their little Iowa, so it's really cool before we get all before we get to all that. Let me just start with a pop quiz Pop Quiz.

It's a guessing game and you One guest to guess the right answer. Okay, which one of us before we came on the platform which one of us felt the need. To ask the other and inform the other about what they were wearing. Okay, which one which one of us, right? Give me one hint this first name starts with a J. Yeah. Yeah, that's a good start last time rhymes with zoller. Okay. Yeah there you know, so there it is supposed to both walk out with you know, the same outfit on look good, you know, we care about this, you know. Hey, so before we get to that commissioning and really this is a this is a big deal for us around Prairie Lakes. It's really important for us to kind of go. Okay. So, how do we get here? Why are we doing this and of all things right of all things? Why is this membership being raised to such a high level? Right? Why are we why are we doing that? I mean, there's churches where they're dropping membership off everything, but we're kind of going just really down. So so before we get to the commissioning and and before we get to all that it's just probably time for just a little bit of retelling of the story of where we've been and we had a To do this in the fall of this year, but let's let's just kind of go do this one more time really quick. Let's rewind back. Let's look back in the last three years figure out how we got here and then why we're doing some of the things that we are doing.

So the last three years for Prairie Lakes for you for the entire world last three years. It's fill a lot like a stress test. I think yeah, you guys know what a stress test is Right a stress test is those things they're uncomfortably helpful uncomfortable because of how they feel helpful because of what of what they reveal and the last three years had a lot of those kinds of stress tests politically socially pandemically, whatever they were and each of these things created just a ton of pressure.

Just a ton of pressure a ton of stress for all of us and and here's what stress tests you stress tests reveal things. They reveal things and the reveal things that are healthy and the confirm those things in the revive things. That aren't are so good. That's right that are not so healthy. So here's here's just at church at Prairie Lakes Church. Here's what the stress test of the last three years. I think just just revealed it revealed some assumptions. We were making yeah that prove maybe not to be true. The first one was this we assume that everybody knew. Oh we meant about no matter because we talk about it like all the time. We said every single weekend the time that's exactly right no matter who you are no matter where you've been no matter you've done what's good? That's right. That's right. But so here's what we noticed. Okay.

This wasn't true for everybody. But it was true for for not just a small amount of people significant amount of people it got revealed. It got revealed, especially as we watched how they navigated some of the stressful things about these last few years how how some of us were behaving on social media not just the content but the tone of what we were saying, yeah how we were dividing over stuff whatever it was politics race, whatever it was dividing over leaving over masks or shutting down whatever. Yeah, we just saw a lot of stuff that we just never thought would be part of very Lakes. That's right. That's right.

That's right. Yeah, so there was a disconnect there's disconnect between what we were saying we were on the weekends and just how we were living our our lives out and let's qualify that really right because I know in the last three years I have been certainly guilty of this thing. Like I've had days like a couple weeks ago. We listen to you and this was super sticky by the way, a lot of us have been talking about it for the last couple of weeks end of Right into the Rope leadership. Yes, right. So a lot of us had days the last few years. We were literally at the end of our rope, right? Okay. So just a lot of opportunities to get sideways that being said that being said, that was the only thing we noticed okay because here's the second thing we noticed we assumed not only that everybody knew what we meant. But we assumed that everybody was aligned. We assume that everybody was aligned with our no matter Mission, but what we saw what we realized what was revealed is that there was there was some drift. Yeah significant amount of Drift actually.

Now over the years you and I worked together now. Full time for 16 sixty percent before that you're here in college, but before that yeah as a 18 19 year old. Yeah and I've had at least one day where you've had to look at me. Well and go hey, hey buddy. Hey, you're going. Yeah, right?

Okay, and you with me? Yeah for sure part of following Jesus we would say is is being willing to kind of go when we get sideways when we drift when we drift. Let's have some crucial conversations and we have been clear for sure and we know when we're drifting we can sense. Yes call it out. Yeah, so true for all of us right for all of us, right? But here's what we noticed. Okay, there was more than one occasion in which we would pull someone aside who we felt like drifting away.

And say hey just lovingly but come on, you know, let's not let some of the stuff get to the same level as are no matter Mission. Let's not let it compete come on come back and then kind of what we got back from. Some folks was like No, no.

This is this is absolutely important. Yeah, this is absolutely absolutely important. Sometimes more important. Yeah, some people's minds. Yeah. Yeah, so we just saw a lot of drift. Yeah. Yeah. We did. Here's what we know about. About drift anytime there's drift misalignment or that you know, the main thing stops becoming the main thing which is just it's epidemic and in organizations for sure churches for sure. Yep, you know so many things that we could do so many ways that you could do things so many right and and then some some places get so we've witnessed this over the years.

Yep, some Churches get so wide trying to be everything and do everything that they'd be just become basically, I'm not useless but but not not making an impact not making that driving things the way they should be so so we think when we think of Drift We very discouraging when people drift from what we feel like we pounded is that no matter thing because whether it's your family your organization whenever you drift it messes with everything and it causes pain and it not only destroys it doesn't destroy a marriage or a business or a family it can disrupt it tremendously. I think just real quick. You said something there. I think it's important like we can Disagreeing a lot of oh, absolutely. You can we can drift on the several different issue. But what was so troubling is like this is the yeah. This is it for us. Yeah. We are you can't afford to drift there. Right? And and so we talked about our core right? It's it's launch mobile matter churches and big Iowa. Okay. We just this is just This is who we are, right if we get that we believe this right no matter churches in in big eye what they're gonna launch no matter followers of Jesus right into their little Iowa and I tell you Jesus was so concerned about drift.

Jesus from the time he started his ministry until till his last kind of words to his disciples were just drilling home on on the clarity. So what he's calling his first disciples like even just for example in Luke 5 when when he's calling Simon Peter and he's calling and it's his words for them. Like it wasn't like, you know, the manifesto of what all can happen. It was it was very simply this and Luke 5:10. Jesus said the Simon don't be afraid right from now on you'll fish for people. He just couldn't be any clearer than that. Here's what you're gonna do. This is this is it you've been a fisherman and fishing for fish and now you're gonna fish for people because that that's that's the ultimate this is like one of the first things that Simon heard from Jesus, It was just clear, right? Yes. Don't don't and notice.

Peter never drifted from that except for a few times and he did. Yeah it bit him. Yeah it bit him. Yeah. So then even the same chapter Luke 5 here's Jesus again, right? So these four friends that somebody you know, the story Luke in Luke 5. So right after when he calls the disciples then four friends bring a paralytic on the mat you remember the story. It's all crowded. They can't get any man. They grow up on the right. They they tear the roof part. They lower the guy down and this is and the fasting thing about this one Luke is This is the first time Luke mentioned Pharisees. The religious people the religious teachers kind of Battle of Jesus. But this is the first mention them and so right in front of the Pharisees at least in Luke the first mention, here's what Jesus they lower him down.

He's lame, right? He's paraly. He knows what he's doing. He knows what he's doing and it says this when Jesus saw their faith talking about the friends he said friend. Your sins are forgiven not so not like your heel. No your first thing he says if you're from the first is your sins and and what Jesus was pointing to is what is going to point to all the time. Was there something greater happening here that can't be seen in that is this that I'm here for this reason to forgive sins. Yeah and just triggers him. Oh man big time the first season teacher the law began thinking to themselves. Who is this fellow who speaks and this is a strong word for them because this was stonable right blasphemy who can forgive sins, but God alone. So this was big right Jesus just trying. Yep. He's laying it out. You're gonna fish for men.

Forgiveness of sins is the issue and here's another one same chapter right beginning of the ministry father in Luke 5. This is when when he calls Matthew, right Matthew equals come follow me the tax collector and then the one of my greatest parts of that story is then he Matthew throws a party for all right. So all the the religious people were there Pharisees and then all the Knuckleheads are there. Yeah, and and they began to question. Like what this is. Okay. He's very deliberate. Yes. It's very deliberately. He knows he's doing in front of people. Yep, and they're asking well you shouldn't be hanging out with these people and Jesus answered him.

It's not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick I've not come to call the righteous but the Sinners too repentance. Just you see this. Jesus was not gonna allow this thing to drift. He came in focused on what mattered the most what it was about people finding forgiveness in himself and peace with God and then what I love I had to put this one in because to me, this is one week. I come back to the story of the kids and Luke 19 summary.

Gets to the end of Zacchaeus in the store. You can go to that this week and Luke 19 for the son of man came to seek and saved at saved. Yeah lost. No drift. That's right. No drift. That's right. Yeah, so, all right. So all that kind of aside we got that one the third thing that those stress tests revealed to us was probably the most convicting.

Yeah, and this is the one where Where we breathe deep and this is the one that really cause change. Yes. It really did for us. Just talking about our no matter mission was enough we assumed that well we talk about it all the time. So so isn't that enough and what we're just what we discover was it just isn't yeah because we thought we could if we just talk about it more the drift will be correct. Absolutely. You're drifting we're drifting we're drift absolutely say that no matter Mission more it'll be right sufficient. And then when we talked about, you know discipline people coming to follow it and know Jesus and and love and Obey more, you know, all those things what we discovered was.

Instead of looking at those people who maybe drifted in saying what's wrong with them? We began to go. Hey, maybe we haven't been doing a great job at this. Yeah, maybe our yeah our our energy needs to go and make sure yeah making sure this doesn't happen. Yeah, that's no that's exactly right. And you know, we've been talking about leadership for the last three weeks.

And you know as we talk about it around here at Prairie Lakes a lot of times, we'll use different definitions and really want additions. We use as Leaders is you are willing to allow your performance to be defined by your team's performance. Yeah, right. So it's easy as leader to point the finger. Yeah, you know the right way. Yeah.

Yeah, probably a reason and it's probably us as Leaders. So so, you know that was a hard thing for us. But once we did we just kind of again rewind back a little bit here the beginning of 2021 if you forget what that was, like, you know pandemic happens in 2020 you shut down. Yeah, I open, you know, there's a little bit of back and forth blah blah 2021 was probably like our first step into whatever our new Norm was gonna be. Yeah, and so enough of this had happened where we got together as Leaders. We got a bunch of Prairie League staff leaders in the room together and we just thought listen on the back side of this given what we've seen about the drift and everything else the back side of this is we're gonna come out of this healthier. Yeah. Well we have to do is double down on understanding and getting clear on what our little Iowa vision is, but not only that we got to get clear on what our strategy is to help that yeah, you know, just correct that help correct right help follow Jesus as his disciples. That's right.

right, so if we're going to be more aligned If we're going to be more aligned around launching no matter followers of Jesus, which is really what we need it. Okay, and we were gonna be more lighter on launching them into their little Iowa's we need to get clear.

On something that we just called our our discipleship path. Yeah, and so really what we're going to be doing really the rest of our our time with you this weekend is is we're gonna walk down some of the some of the content of our membership class. This is the same content that people were commissioning have all kind of walked through. Yeah, but this really came up all of this came about as a result of us kind of going we need to correct. Yeah, and we need to keep get after a lot of prayer a lot of study a lot of vulnerable. Okay God. What are you doing conversations and time as Leaders? Yep. No, that's exactly that's exactly right. So you've seen this before this is these are gonna be slides from our membership class. But here's what are discipleship path is. Here's what it looks like. We're trying to to grab people wherever they're at on this path an interested and to like spiritually curious. Maybe they start ask questions maybe, you know dip in their tone to church Crossing that Faith line to becoming a new believer. Just celebrate that after a new believer.

A big step of baptism and celebrate that but what here's what we were seeing. Okay, we were seeing that while we could kind of reach into that uninterested and spiritually curious we would get guests for sure. We we always celebrate baptisms really well and some of those steps. We just saw there was a lot of people that were stuck. Yeah.

And when you're stuck, that's when that drift happens, right? Yeah. Yeah you sit in that spot. I'm over the faith line and I'm following Jesus and now I'm and all kinds of stuff happens when you get stuff. That's right. That's when it gets weird. So what we needed was like how to get people on stock because really what we want we want disciple makers.

We want disciple makers reaching into their little Iowa's into those uninterested and spiritually curious people. That's really what we want is our remember our mission is You as a no matter follow Jesus now you go. Let's stay here. This isn't the point the point is it that's right fill up your head with more but the point is take what we know take what you learn about Jesus about yourself. And now you go we do it Jesus. Yeah, let's be super clear. Yeah primary way that prelix church is going to reach its communities. Pray like people yes one.

Conversations right one friendship. That's right one coffee. That's exact time. Right. That's exactly so here's what we kind of here's what we've workshopped. We have completely redone our membership class as a way to catalyze that movement helping stuck people who have maybe known Jesus for a long time apology Jesus for a long time even love our church kind of go. I need to get better at reaching into my life to get on Mission with yes, and we know that when people come to know Jesus what we always say is you got to be sick of yourself, right? Well, even as a follower of Jesus there has to be some discontentment that you got I'm not I can't stay here. Yep, sick of myself. I'm sick of just kind of floating here or just being in the same spot, right? Exactly. Right?

So the people that what we're gonna do this weekend and what we're gonna do this this commissioning it's gonna be it's gonna be a pattern for us that we're gonna we're gonna start doing this. Yeah. And one thing I want you to know is this is Is this is a membership class? But what we desire is that it's we want everybody to go through this. I really do you could've been remember for a long time. But man we we want to re-engage and we want you to reengage with the mission. Yeah, and we think it's we think this class be great for everybody. Yeah, and we would say we just clarify that a little bit more because we would say everybody who is currently a member. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yes. Thank you. Everybody who's currently a member. Even if you're already a member you've heard in the class. It's brand new.

We really want to encourage you to go through it. It may not be the step for for like literally every right, you're kind of newer to pray Lakes. You're kind of just getting your foot. This is not something we're saying we want you to go into but if there's a lot of us for whom this is right and and the description of what we just talked about was if you're kind of over the faith line you're trust in Christ, but you're feeling kind of soccer even afterthatic. Hey, we want you to engage. Yeah, we want you to engage. So let's keep moving here. What we want to do is just want to give you a little bit of a previous class one in class too. This is right part of the class. This is these are actually parts of the class. So class one. Here's what class ones all about. We're asking this Question is is what is? Oh no matter Church. Yeah, what does it mean to be a no matter church. And by the way, is that even biblical? Yeah, make sure say it but is that it's a great race. Yeah. Yeah. And so there's a there's a lot of content a lot of discussion that we get to do. Here's what I just want to share with you one passage of scripture from that class. It ends up being a light bulb moment for people. Okay. So this is First Corinthians 14:23 through 25, here's how it reads. So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, we'll talk about that. But if the whole church comes together and this is some kind of crazy stuff's going on and inquirers or unbelievers come in.

Okay, and inquirers are unto Believers, we would use uninterested or spiritually curious same thing for an arm. That's right. That's right. If you got people like that in there, will they not say that you are out of your mind? Yes, they will right. So if the unbeliever or inquire comes in what everyone's prophesying they're they're convicted of sin. They're broader judgment, but I'll prophesying is something that's just more way more relatable. Like maybe it'd be us having crucial conversations with yeah telling the truth and then watching us respond like yeah, right I'm wrong. I needed like if they witness that they witness that they're absolutely secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they'll fall down the worship God exclaiming God is really among you. Okay. So here's what we need to draw out of this passage in terms of what does it mean to be a no matter.

Church, we probably want to talk about tongues. Okay times that it's really not the purpose of what Paul's talking about there his point is this there ought to be unbelievers in church. Let's say that again. Okay, they're awesome to be unbelievers in church one more time. They're ought to be Believers Insurance.

Yeah. Absolutely. It was true back then. Yeah, it's true now, right? Yeah there ought to be okay and if they're ought to be we ought to be mindful of them. Yeah and it should impact How We Do Worship. Yeah because it was true back then. Yeah, right we should plan accordingly. And when we do that when we do that God might use what these folks witness with one another here to help them go from being uninterested spiritually curious and unbeliever and choir to be part of the family right to go from being just part of the Gathering. Yeah.

To being stepping across that line of faith and being part of the family of God, right? So here's how we summarize all this there's somebody you want to say about it. No, I'm This Is Us. Okay, this is awesome. That's work and let's give you tip, right? So yeah, I'm you sure. Yeah. No. I'm not sure. Let me go so so for everybody.

That needs to come and know God. They got to have a place where they can walk into. Yeah, they just do on the on the arm of a trusted friend. They got to come to place where they know they're not going to get. Talk down to they're not gonna get they're not going to get judged. Yep. And you know, my my passion is you know, I've said this 1,000 times now is I've got 11 grandkids and wherever they landed in Iowa and I know I want what we pray my wife and I pray daily for they would love Jesus and follow Jesus, but what we know is they're gonna have times when they're gonna struggle and when they find themselves whatever town they live in Iowa, whatever they find themselves struggling.

That there's got to be a place a church that they can walk into and they can be loved and they can go on this journey and find out who God is and what he's doing and they can walk this journey at the pace that they're on and they could they can be confronted with the truth of Jesus. They can confront it with their sin in a way that they're loved and cared for and and we've got to be we've got to be a place like that and I think to think the thing that's most important is not it's not just because Grandpa John says so no it's because the Bible says the word of God. Yes. So yes, it was a model of Jesus. That's right. It was the model of Jesus. He was that's right. Yeah one more question about that, please just no but yes. No, how's that?

No. No, I just I'm we know that we're gonna reach, Iowa. When it's when it's one relationship a time, it's my little eye what I'm going into. And and if I can have a safe landing place where I can yeah, I give them to my house. I can get him in the driveway. I can get them go to a game. We can do all those things but it's get them to church eventually, right? It's on my arm. Yep, but I want to you want to be able to trust that you can bring your friend who isn't there yet?

And he can or she can walk in and they can just feel yeah, and they can sense and they can understand and they can hear. Yep. We've removed all the barriers that we can yeah. Well, I I was a college student when I first heard you articulate that yeah, right. Yeah, and I've heard you articulate that and a number of different ways over the years and and at our best we'll say something like this. That kind of church isn't for everybody, right?

We're aware of that. Yeah, and we taking a lot of different kinds of arrows over the years of people who feel like we ought not to be that we ought to be a church. It's a little bit more for wherever they're at. Yeah a little bit further along a little bit deeper a little bit more Revenant, whatever it is, right? And at our worst we kind of like wear like a badge and like don't let the Lord. Yeah, where the damage where the Lord whatever that's right other words right at our best. We just kind of say this Hey listen, There's plenty churches out there that are like that God's working in them.

By the way. Yeah, he's using them like, we're not we're not someone who's just gonna sit here and say our way is better. But this is why we are the way they are and this is who we are here. Yeah. Yeah and this and and we've established this and we establish this in the class. So so heavily It's not your idea of my idea. You're not both been sweet. We're theologically trained. We've done the Greek in the Hebrew the Systematic Theology and and when we read the Bible and we read about the life of Jesus this we believe this is the picture. That's right. We do and this is what we're committing Our Lives of this that we have. So yeah, we'll Zoom we'll Zoom through the rest of this year.

Yeah quick just as some summary about the church and then we'll talk about what's no matter. Yeah, but here's how we're gonna end the first class by saying some of these things the church is a gathering of God's people it is this together that's open to anybody right I believe is a non-believers and we want to be very clear. There's a difference between being a part of the Gathering as open to everybody absolutely part of God's family, which is those who have stepped across that I yeah, so everybody who's the part of the church Gathering isn't a part of the church family necessarily, right the difference. There's the thing. Yeah, I'm gonna be super clear on that. However, the difference right?

After being across that Faith line is the most significant decision you can possibly make and we'll be super clear on that. We're almost clear like almost every single weekend listen nine out of 10 weekends and you've got Marcus on this we try to say well some point in the message or the weekend. Here's what it means. It's cross the faith line to trust Jesus and become a follower. Yeah. Yeah. That's exactly right. So final thing at a church Gathering level.

This is how we design our services. Okay, we're Mindful and plan for unbelievers. So that why so they might clearly respond. We don't want anything in the way no keep everything else bonding. Yes, everything all the way and if you know just think and put it for this really personal.

You've got a buddy that you've been praying for and you're you're working on them. And finally they say yes. Yes. Yeah, you want to bring them to a place where it's yeah, it's it's a gathering of when we're going to deep into Ecclesiastes, right? Yeah. Yeah lamentation. Yeah. Yeah, you know and there's the word of God is the word of God and we want to make this accessible. Yes, Jesus. Did you want to know what's most important? What's most important? So yeah, so we're good and that's no matter. So class one is What is no matter church and that we all if you're gonna be a part of this this thing you got to be able to tickle it and clearly do that. So let's let's go class two. And here's what class two is primarily designed. They're solely designed around really it's no matter followers. Yeah. What we say is we want to be no matter churches that help you become grow into develop into these Disciples of Jesus these no matter followers who get launched into their little Iowa your circle of friends, your neighbor your coworkers, you're relative to the people that you work out with.

And that's what we want. Right and we got to be clear on this no matter this is you know, some Outsiders. I've heard this before no matter what per Lakes, you know, I no matter whatever you want there. Come on, don't be a dork. That's silly Jesus died for sin. And that's how that's how that's how how weighty this thing is. This is this is eternities in the state right stake of attorney Okay, so, No matter what no matter who you are. Where you been watching. What's been done to you you can you we believe God loves you and he does the Bible tells us so that you can walk in and you can begin this journey. It does matter that you don't stay stuck. We don't wink at sinus. It's like no that's why I had a path the first because we want to see movie. We want to see the movement down the pathway and and so I always want to be very clear on that because I love my kids but I wouldn't want them to keep being disobedient. That's not loving them by letting things go. So so we do that. All right. So when we talk about becoming disciples, right so become disciples moving to be disciple makers.

Here's what we really will push hard on this we need to find depth as obedience not knowing more for knowing more sake we believe you need to know. We need to know the word. We need to study the word. We let the word Lord speak to us. We talk all the time about give God room. Pray dig in we're yes. Yes, and yes, but for people who are at the stage. Yes discipleship path. Yeah already. Yes, if you already you've been sitting that for soul Foundation.

Yeah, you're solid you're in you know, the Bible you are you're there. Here's the deal Jesus the depth equals obedience because Jesus says this Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me our obedience to God and our love for God has a relationship take a little bit for other. This is right from the start from the class.

Jesus doesn't leave us our own right? So we're not on your own try to muscle up how to be obedient to Jesus right? When you step over the faith line and Trust Christ We Believe at that moment the Holy Spirit enters. You not a later thing. We learn to submit more we learned to obey more all those things but he comes in and here's what he does. He sent the Holy Spirit to to Advocate to teach to remind and be with us and in our learning and in our doing that's right because we can't just soak it in. It's both John 14. Jesus says, this is crucial. Jesus says if you love me keep my commands, there's love and obedience and I'll ask the father. He'll give you another Advocate to help you to be with you forever. The spirit of Truth. There it is.

The world cannot accept him because either sees him nor knows him. But you know him for he lives with you and will be in you and then later he says this and this just can't get any clearer. Whoever has my commands and keeps them. Yeah is the one who loves me. Whoever loves me read the Bible. Yeah. Yeah, baby. Yes read Bible. Yes, pray. Yes. Yes obedience is the key, right? So here's what it means everybody right?

This is what we're doing. Here's what it means. The deepest thing we can do as apprentices of Jesus disciples of Jesus is to obey to actually do the things God do things God and his son Jesus told us to do. Okay. All right, we got that and here's the second part. You're depth as a follower of Jesus.

Is determined by your increasing love and obedience to Jesus which is marked by the love for your neighbor. Right? We got the great commandment the Great Commission Matthew 22, they say Jesus with most important. We say this all the time. He says love Lord of God all your heart all your mind all your strength, right?
