Whether you're one of our physical locations all across Iowa or part of our online campus all across Iowa and Beyond We Are One Church on many corners welcome and the happy Labor Day weekend everybody. I sincerely hope you get some time this weekend to relax to not work to enjoy doing some of the things you love doing and hey just full disclosure. I love Labor Day weekend because it is The Unofficial start of fall and fall is by far the best season of the year. So if you love summer, it's over.

Okay, sorry, not sorry about that. But I love Labor Day because and fall because you get fall colors, right the tree start changing hopefully soon. We'll get some cool crisp fall days. There's pumpkin spice everything all over the place and the best part about fall barn on is college football starts. Okay.

Now I've been saying this is 2014. I believe this in the heart of hearts inside of That this is the year that my Huskers finally beat, Iowa in a football game. Okay been saying that for eight years. But if I'm being honest probably not right but there's always hope right there's always hope for Husker fan, but I've been saying that for eight stinking years. All right. Hey, let's dive in this weekend. We are in week three of a series called moved and we're looking at how people grow and mature in their faith and we want you to continue to take steps in your faith. We don't want you to get stuck or hung up in your journey with Jesus in a Prayer Lake Church. We've gotten really clear about what the deception pathway looks like what next steps you need to take and what Milestones move you from one part of the deception pathway into the next so I'm gonna show you the discipleship pathway right now. So we all start in this spot of being uninterested and uninterested people don't come to church. They don't ask questions about God because they are on interested. But as soon as somebody one of our campuses makes themselves known which means they identify themselves and say hey I'm here. They enter what we call a spiritually curious face and that spiritually curious phase really is maybe I'm starting to come to church. I'm asking questions about God maybe I'm coming to a small group. I'm taking some small steps towards Jesus and Pastor John really laid this out two weeks ago. He said, hey, we love people in the spiritually curious phase. We love people that ask honest authentic questions because Jesus loves those people and and so do we and as soon as you take a step across the faith on as soon as you confess and believe in Jesus and cross the faith on you move into what we call the new believer phase of the discipleship pathway and Pastor John talked about that pathway last weekend or that phase rather and about how that phase really is from the faith line to baptism how baptism is that last step of the new believer phase and if you've not gotten baptized yet. Hey sign up to get baptized at your campus today. Okay, don't wait. We're gonna do baptisms this fall. We want you to take that important step so that you can move into the next phase of this life of s*** pathway, which we're gonna talk about this weekend the being discipled face. And here's the cool thing about this phase. The being discipled face starts with you getting baptized and it ends with Membership class now. I'm gonna talk about that a little bit. But the the cool thing about this phase is most of you are in this phase right now. So right now I really do get to talk to most of you that are listening right now because most of you are in this phase of the discipleship.

Pathway now. Here's the thing about this being discipled phase of the Celestia pathway. It's all about maturity. Because before you can move on to the disciple maker phase before you can really reach in your little eye well and grab people that are uninterested or spiritually curious or new Believers that help them grow. You have to mature in your own faith with Jesus. You have to be in a spot that is mature. So you can help other people grow and mature now as a pastor.

I love this phase of the discipleship pathway. I love people that are in the being discipled phase because it's really we're a person's faith is Galvanized and strengthened. Okay. Now, here's the two reasons why I love the being discipled face first. It's a season full of fat people now some of you like Pastor just made fun of me. Hang on. Okay, I'm not talking about physically fat. I'm talking about faithful available and teachable people in the being disciple phase especially early on man when someone gets baptized they move into this phase. They're awesome because they're faithful they're available and they're teachable and they're really really excited about their faith and they're taking next steps and as a pastor, it's so fun to watch people in that stage. It's fun to watch people take small steps that lead to big.

Results in their faith. I love it. Honestly as a pastor when someone checks every box on the welcome card because I'm like man, they're growing they're taking steps. It's awesome. So if you are spiritually fat right now if you're faithful available and teachable. Stay that way my friend. Okay, stay that way stay in that spot.

But here's the second reason why I like this phase of the subject pathway. It's also a season of testing. The season of testing I tell people this all the time at Prairie Lake Church, when you take eternity shaping life-changing decisions about faith, like when you cross the faith line or you get baptized Temptation the enemy are right there every time you do it just it's just how it works with faith. And in this phase of this life is a pathway. We're in the being discipled phase and we're maturing in our faith. That's when our sin patterns start to confront us. We start to see things our lives and go. Hey that probably shouldn't be there or I need to relate to that person differently and we see ways that we need to repent and change and grow and in this phase of this life to pathway. We also start to face adversity. We have family and friends that aren't on team Jesus and they think we're being radical. I think we're being weird. We walk through seasons of grief or financial struggle or relational difficulty and now we're doing those things and walk them through those Seasons with Jesus and with his people and so we're doing it differently than we did before but it's a learning process and as a pastor and one of my greatest gifts from God is watching people.

mirror and grow through this being discipled face for people to become fat and whether seasons of testing so We're going to talk right now about. How we move along this stage of the discipleship pathway because what we need to do first as we do that is really defined two things. What is a disciple of Jesus and how do we mature in the faith?

What does a disciple and how do we mature we're gonna walk through these things one at a time. So first what is a disciple of Jesus simply put here? It is a follower or disciple of Jesus is one who increasingly loves and obeys Jesus. That's the simplest definition of a disciple and somebody who loves and obeys Jesus and increasing measure.

Now the Greek word for disciple in the New Testament is methatase, which is translated. There you go methatase into English which means to come to know or understand something Often by being taught. So you're learning from Jesus you're growing in your relationship with him. He's teaching you and ultimately to be a father. Jesus is to be an apprentice of Jesus that we're learning and we're doing we're not just learning about Jesus. We're also practicing and living the way Jesus wants us to live. That's what a disciple is.

It's an apprentice of Jesus someone increasingly loves and obeys Jesus, but don't just take my word for it. Okay. I want you to see the words of Jesus. This is in Matthew chapter 16, and this is verse 24 and then we're gonna read 25 but here's 24. Here's what Jesus says about being a disciple.

It says then Jesus said to his disciples whoever wants to be my disciple. My methetase must deny themselves. Take up their cross and follow me. Jesus says here's what a disciple does they pick up their cross. They follow me. They do the things I've instructed them to do. They teach the things that I teach them. They they follow after me. If you want to be a follower of Jesus an apprentice of Jesus a disciple of Jesus. You have to pick up your cross and follow after Jesus and that's true.

Even when it's unpopular. And even when it's uncomfortable and even when you feel like you can't and even following Jesus feels like losing we're still called to pick up our cross and follow him because that's what being a disciple a follower of Jesus is all about and if you're in this being discipled phase of your spiritual journey the Mantra that you should roll with over and over and over again, is this less of me and more of him?

Less of me and more of him. That's what it means to grow in this being discipled face as a follower of Jesus, but then Jesus continues in verse 25, he says this for whoever wants to save their life will lose it. whatever loses their life for me will find it.

Jesus says hey if you want to find life true life eternal life. It's the path. We've losing your life in exchange for the life of Jesus. It's becoming more like him and following in his footsteps see a disciple or follower of Jesus is one who learns from walks in the footsteps of Jesus meaning we do what he did. We teach what he taught we live how he lived we lay down our lives. We pick up our cross every day and follow after him we learn and we do and by extension. We look more and more like him. That is what it means to be a disciple a follower.

Of Jesus. So the question now is okay. That's a follower. But how do we know if we mature how do we know that we're growing and not staying stuck in the same place as a follower of Jesus. Here's how Jesus answers that question. What is Christian maturity? For disciple of Jesus depth and maturity equals one word.

obedience For Jesus depth maturity in the faith equals obedience. Now there's a lot of things that we might be tempted to put into that equation. Right like church attendance next steps time love what you're all wonderful things. But Jesus says the one thing that defines your maturity as a Christian is obedience.

It's obedience. See for Jesus maturity equals obedience and that's a challenge because obedience is hard. But here's the beautiful thing about following Jesus. He doesn't leave us on our own to follow him in our own strength and power. He sends the Holy Spirit to be our Advocate our teacher our guide and to remind us continually and are learning and our doing.

So here's what I want you to do right now. I want you to open your Bibles to John chapter 14, and we're starting in verse 15. Okay, so John 14:15. So if you got a physical Bible John is the fourth book of the New Testament goes Matthew Mark Luke and John grab your phone. I want you to eyeball these words. I'm gonna put them up here as well. But I want you to eyeball these words if you can in your Bible because in John chapter 14 starting in verse 15, Jesus defines discipleship as maturity, and I want you to see this maturity as obedience. I want you to see this. He says this If you love me keep my commands, I'm just gonna stop there. Okay, because it's very black and white. Jesus says if you love me keep my commands, Jesus is maturity equals obedience.

Maturity equals obedience black and white. He says hey our love for Jesus can be measured how obedient we are to his commands and what has Jesus commanded. Well, he's commanded that we love God with everything that we love our neighbor as ourselves. He's commanded that we forgive he's commanded that we give generously he's commanded that we live in Purity with our eyes and our minds and our bodies. He's commanded that we make disciples and a whole lot of other things and Jesus says your your maturity as a Christian is defined by your obedience to the things that God has commanded but he doesn't expect us to do that on our own.

This is what the best things about the Christian faith. God gives us power and help in the Journey of maturity and obedience. Here's what he says he says and I will ask the father and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever. The spirit of Truth know the spirit is capitalized. That means the Holy Spirit. He says I'm gonna give you the Holy Spirit. He says the world cannot accept him because it neither sees him or knows him, but you know him for he lives with you and will be in you.

Jesus says the holy spirit will be in you to guide you and Empower you as you walk in obedience as you mature in your faith. You don't have to try to do it alone. In fact Ephesians 1:13 says that for all people that step over the faith line and trust in Jesus and confess in him when you take that step Ephesians 1:13 says you are sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise meaning God puts his holy spirit inside of you to remind you to teach you to empower you to help you that you do not have to try to be obedient to God Alone.

In fact, one of the best ways that we mature as follows of Jesus is not our individual will power and might but it's surrendering to the Holy Spirit and letting him in power and guide the way that we live and the way that we love and then he wraps up this passage this way. Here's what Jesus says. He says I will not leave you as orphans.

I will come to you. Before long the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live you will also live he said because I've resurrected you're gonna be resurrected too on that day. You'll realize that I am in my father and you are in me and I am in you.

Again, Jesus says it clearly there at the end. He says maturity equals obedience if you love me, do what I say. See we demonstrate our love for Jesus and how we follow in his footsteps. We deny ourselves pick up our cross and we follow not in our own power and strength but in the power and strength that the Holy Spirit alive in us gives us My friends Jesus says this today. He says Hey the deepest thing that we can do as apprentices or followers of him is to obey him.

To do the things that God and his son Jesus told us to do. And that your depth as a follower of Jesus, you're maturity is defined by your love and obedience to Jesus, which is often seen most practically in your love of your neighbor. How do you treat the people around you?

That's what being a disciple is. That's what maturity is maturity equals obedience. But I want to spend a couple minutes now and talk just about the ingredients of obedience. What does it look like for follower of Jesus to mature and to grow like what needs to be in place in their lives in order for that to happen? And there's three things. I want to talk about these one at a time. The first is this it's learning.

If we're gonna do what God asks us to do if we're gonna grow in obedience to him. We have to know who God is and what God's commanded us. And we cannot mature and be obedient Jesus if we don't know what he's done or what he's asked us to do we have to dig into the Bible if the study the Bible and study theology learn about who is God and what does he commanded me to do and the beautiful thing about this learning is we never hit bottom. We never get to a place where we've learned all we can learn about God or the Bible. It is an eternal process and it's a beautiful thing.

The second ingredient of obedience is this it's doing it's one thing to learn. It's a whole other thing to do. But we have to live out our fix we practically have to walk in obedience to what we know from the scriptures what we read and what we learn we're now accountable and we got to live it out and listen. I don't know about you. It's way easier for me to learn than do.

I can learn about forgiveness and know about forgiveness, but when I practically have to live it out it is so hard sometimes to do. But God says hey. Maturity equals obedience. It's not just knowing it's it's doing But there's a third ingredient of obedience that really doesn't matter that I think we neglect a lot and it's this it's relationships.

It's relationships for a lot of us. This is the missing ingredient to being obedient to God we learn a lot about the Bible we learn a lot about God we're living out we're walking it out, but we fail to live in deep relationships with others. And listen. That's the opposite of what Jesus did when Jesus came to this Earth for three and a half years. He willingly chose think about this he willingly chose a three and a half year camping tour of the Middle East with 12 knuckleheaded teenage boys. Think about that.

He chose that why because he needed to demonstrate practically. This is what it looks like to be obedient to God to follow him to live for him. He taught them they did stuff and they did it in context of relationship. You cannot do the Christian life alone. And you cannot perfectly be obedient to God without being in relationships with people. You can't forgive people that aren't around you. You can't love people that you're not connected to you need relationships. It's learning it's doing and it's relationships for the disciple of Jesus. You got to have all three of these in place or you're gonna get stuck if you're missing somebody these ingredients in your relationship with Jesus and others. You're going to get stuck now. I know you cannot completely separate all these out right like there's overlap like sometimes you learn by doing I get that and sometimes you learn in relationship with others I get that but listen these three categories these ingredients are very helpful because they help you see where you might be missing a step where there might be a missing ingredient and these three things help Define what your next step today might be as you think about as a follower of Jesus. What is my next step? Here's the question for you, which one of these ingredients is missing from your life right now.

Is it learning to doing is it relationships or or put another way which one of these three ingredients? Are you the weakest in right now? Because as a follower of Jesus, your next step is probably implementing that into your life. Whatever that is in this moment. Now, here's the thing. I know some of you are visual Learners. Okay, you like books with pictures. Okay, if that's you right now, I'm gonna help you out. I'm gonna give you a metaphor for these three ingredients of obedience.

So I want you to think of these ingredients of obedience learning doing relationships like Wheels. Okay think of them like Wheels right now. You need all three wheels to be stable and moving fast one wheel is good two wheels is better three wheels is optimal with these ingredients of obedience. So here's a here's a picture for you right now. Okay, if you have one of these ingredients in your life, here's what it's like.

It's like riding a unicycle. Okay. Now this dude must be like the Michael Jordan of unicyclist because he's got sweet clothes. He's really confident and apparently he can juggle on a unicycle which is ridiculous. Okay. Now if this guy gets on this giant unicycle, he can go he can move he can cover ground but it's not going to be super fast and I don't care how good he is it writing a unicycle you can only ride on one wheel so far so fast and that's what it's like. This is what it's like when only one of those ingredients of obedience is active in our lives. You may be learning a lot about the Bible praise God.

That is an awesome thing. But if you're not living it out, if you're not repenting of sin, if you're if you're not doing that with other people if there's not close relationships in your life where you're living out the faith. It's like riding a unicycle you're gonna grow but it's gonna be real slow and you're gonna get frustrated. There's gonna be times when you get hung up and stuck better than one wheel. It's two wheels like this you go a lot further faster. If you get on a bike now, this gal is hauling down a mountain with snow in the background, which is just kind of crazy.

But she's going a lot faster than that unicyclist could ever go because she's got two wheels. She's more stable. She can move farther and she can move faster than she could with one wheel and this is what it's like in the discipleship Journey when we've got two ingredients of obedience at work. So maybe you're in a small group and you're a relationship with other followers of Jesus and you're you're learning a lot about the Bible which is a wonderful thing. But the missing ingredient in the middle of doing isn't quite there for you. It's like riding a bike with two wheels. It's good better than one but you don't have all the ingredients of obedience. You need to keep adding a third wheel, which is this picture right here.

This is a picture of what it's like when you have all three of the ingredients of obedience in your discipleship Journey when you're learning you're doing it in relationships their stability. There's power there's speed you can move far and you can move fast when all three of those ingredients of obedience are active in your life.

My friends many years ago. I was in my 20s and I live and worked in Colorado early 20s mid 20s at a Christian Treatment Center in the foothills of Colorado above Denver and it was called Lost and Found Incorporated awesome name, right? So I was in this being discipled phase and I had all three of these ingredients of obedience working in my life and I still look back at this time of my life 20 years ago with great fondness great memories because it was an awesome time in my life.

Now, I worked with adolescent boy. So 12 to 20 years old about 20 at a time and I got to see the other side of life. Okay, I really did for this kid that grew up in Suburban Nebraska to be in in the Denver Foothills and experience sex offenders drug addicts gang members accessories to murder. Like I dealt with the roughest of the rough young men from the Denver area and I spent nearly every day of every week for four years with some of these young men for months at a time sometimes years at a time and during those four years.

All three of these ingredients of obedience in my life and it was a beautiful beautiful thing. First. I was learning we had these beautiful facility Bible studies Where We Gather a staffer and all these kids together and we would learn and teach the Bible together even to kids that didn't necessarily want to hear man. They heard the gospel and it was awesome and I was at church every week and I was digging into the Bible on my own and I actually began my first Bible study I ever taught was at that facility, but I wasn't just learning I was also doing I was doing I was required to live out my faith every single day as a part of my job. I had 20 young men who desperately needed to see Jesus and they desperately needed to see what a Godly Man's life look like and how a Godly Man lived and so by God's grace I got to see a lot of those young men come to Faith In Jesus, which was a beautiful thing. But listen it was so hard.

He was difficult. It tested my patience. There was a lot of days that I wanted to quit and there were several guys there who at times threatened my life in my physical safety as you can imagine. but I grew a ton by living out my faith trying to treat these young men like Jesus would and I had amazing relationships.

I was surrounded by some of those christ-like people I've ever met in my entire life. I was invested in an investing in others our Treatment Center. There was like a family we ate meals together. We prayed together. We worshiped together. We had fun together and I'm still in contact with some of those people 20 years later because they had that kind of an impact on my life and I look back at that season with fondness good memories good experiences that molded me into the person I am today because all three of those ingredients of obedience were active in my life. I was riding on three wheels.

I was moving far and moving fast and listen if you're in this being discipled phase right now. I want that for you. I want for you to learn and do and be in relationships. I want you to be riding on three wheels and stability and power and taking next steps and growing quickly.

So here's here's a graphic that we already put up, but I added a little bit to the bottom here. So if you're in the being discipled phase right now, if all of Jesus you've been baptized you're taking next steps. But you feel hung up or you feel like there's something that you're missing one of those ingredients of obedience. You're missing. I want you right now to just text in real time. Grab your phone. Because there's seven or eight small incremental steps in there that we list for you that you can take as a person in the being discipled face. So that you can add one of those ingredients or maybe two those ingredients that you're missing of obedience into your life. It might be learning it might be doing and it might be relationships.

But I want you to find whatever one it is right now in the spot that you're in and take a courageous step to grow. Now here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to spend the time that we have left highlighting a few next steps that you could take. Some pretty powerful small steps you can take that could have a really big result in your life in terms of your walk with Jesus that can help you mature and grow in obedience. So here they are ready small steps that produce big results how to move on three wheels in your life right now first healthy personal spiritual rhythms learn to self feed learn to self feed. Hey father Jesus, if you're in this the being discipled phase of the discipleship pathway, one of the Hallmarks of people in your spot is a desire to read God's word.

A desire to learn about God and not just desire to learn about God but actually practically disciplining yourself to do that day in day out week in week out learning to feed yourself and grow. Is an ingredient of obedience it's the learn ingredient of obedience to allow the Holy Spirit to give you self-control and discipline to dive into scripture Sabbath and prayer. Okay.

Full disclosure as a pastor if you want to ruin my day as a pastor. You only have to say one thing to me and this happens sometimes. All you have to do is come up to me and say hey Pastor. I just don't feel like I'm getting fed enough at Prairie Lakes Church. Okay and watch my head explode and watch my blood pressure go up like 20 points in two seconds. Why why because it's your job as a follower of Jesus to feed your self.

period I mean, yes coming to church worshiping together. We worship we sing We proclaim the gospel. We study the scriptures together and that's all the things that we should do in its beautiful. But if you don't know how to read your Bible on your own if you don't get in the word regularly on your own, if you don't learn how to do that you're missing out and you're not gonna mature.

It's not just my job to teach you the Bible. It's your job as a person that being discipled face to read your Bible, which means you got to have a plan and you got to have time. This is the two ingredients. If you learn to self feed you got to have a plan and time my plan and my time is breakfast every morning.

I read my Bible every morning. I've been doing this for five years Bible reading plan in a year YouVersion plan. I grab a new one every year. So every day I wake up. I grab my phone I grab my breakfast I sit down I read whatever is on there for the day I eat and then I just that's my thing. I learned I grow I take it next step. I want to encourage you to do that.

You need to set time and a plan but one of the Hallmarks of a maturing Christian is you learn how to feed yourself. That's number one. There's number two. serving purposely inside outside the walls of church serving purposely inside and outside the walls of church. This is the doing ingredient of obedience and some of your in this spot where you're not serving within or outside the walls of church, but part of following in the footsteps of Jesus is giving your life away like Jesus did and a big part of that is through service. Listen, your gifts are not for you. They're for me and all of us. My gifts are not for me either for all of you. That's how God has designed it. And if you're not serving purposefully you're missing out.

On connecting with people and living out your faith and I'm encourage you to do that today if that's your next step then lastly. Connecting relationally in a small group. You may be learning a lot practicing your faith a lot, but you're not in deep relationship with other followers of Jesus. Listen, if that's you you're missing out.

You're missing out. And right now you have a golden opportunity to jump into a small because we start a small group Series in two weeks called what made Jesus and for six weeks. We're in a small groups are gonna meet and you're gonna get to practice and put into practice the relationship component of obedience that ingredient of obedience in your life. That may be the one thing that you've been missing.

And maybe the one thing that you've been delaying doing for really long time and if that's you I really want for you to be connected relationally. I want you to be in a small group. It's such an important part of maturing and growing in your faith. Don't don't let fear win. Don't let a busy schedule win. I want you today in this moment to sign up for a small group if you're not there because it really does matter.

Now here's what I know is true. For some of you you've been yesing and amening this whole message where you're like, yep, I do that. Yep. I do that. You kind of mentally checked off all the boxes, right? All the ingredients of obedience. I'm doing those things and and all the stuff that the pastor just talked about. I can do it all of those three things and like yes, I feel good about myself. And if that's you listen, you're ready for the next challenge in this phase of discipleship of the being disciple phase. You're ready to leave this phase and take a next step into The disciple maker phase where you get to reach back and make disciples of people in your little Iowa and that's an exciting thing. And there is one powerful step that you can take to move from the being discipled phase of this is you into the disciple maker phase and it is a step of alignment and obedience and Challenge and that step is membership class and some of you right now are like what in the world are you talking about? Like I'm confused as to why membership classes of staff and I was really anti-climactic and I don't understand what you're talking about. Like why is membership gonna Help Me Grow mature or you're like, hey, I already took that class. I already been there done that. Okay. Listen.

In just a moment your weekend house is gonna come up. And they're gonna spend several minutes talking about our redesign membership class experience. Now, it's going to be a catalyst for your faith. Grow how it's gonna help you make disciples. How's going to move you down the discipleship pathway in a significant way and how it's going to be a uniter for Prairie Lakes Church.

And just listen. Hey, I'm super excited for this membership class experience. I think it's gonna be changing and radical and amazing for our church. And as a campus Pastor, I can't wait to lead my campus through this experience. But in just a moment your weekend house is gonna come up and they're gonna describe to you how this is a catalyst for your faith growth and the next step into the being or the disciple maker phase.

But before they come up, hey, I want to pray and just ask God to bless all of us right now. So let's pray. Hey Lord, thank you for the gift of knowing you. God thank you that you give us clear next steps and that we can pick up our cross and and follow after you. Jesus thank you for coming to us and showing us how to live a perfect life and then dying in our place.

Thank you. God that you continually show us how to live with you and for you. And God thank you that it's not about our power or strength, but it's about your spirit alive in us empowering us to live for you. And God I pray right now for all that are being in the that are in the being discipled phase.

I pray God that you help them to learn to self feed God help them to live out all three ingredients of obedience and not get stuck.
