Introduction
God’s love comes alive through His messengers – angels, prophets, and even ordinary people – who shared the news of Jesus’ birth. But this message isn’t just for them; it’s for everyone. During this Advent series, we’ll find how God invites us to step out in faith and obedience as a messenger of hope in a world that needs it. In week three, Pastor John shared the story of the shepherds in the Christmas story - and how God uses unassuming people in unexpected ways to share his message.
Discussion
1. Revisit and read Luke 2:8-20. Think of a time when God showed up in an unexpected way in your life. Then, share your story and how it changed your perspective or deepened your faith.
2. We often picture shepherds with a sense of reverence today, but in biblical times they were ordinary laborers - considered the most common and insignificant people in society. What does God choosing to speak to them in this critical moment reveal about his character?
3. Pastor John highlighted how God has consistently used unassuming (and even unqualified) people to move his mission forward (Moses, Ruth, Peter, etc.). How does this truth encourage you in your faith and your ability to serve God?
4. Reflect on the idea that God often shows up in small, quiet ways rather than grand gestures. Share how you’ve seen this in your own life and if there have been any themes or patterns.
5. The angel told the shepherds, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news." Then, they responded by going to see Jesus and sharing what they had experienced. How can you become more attentive to God’s presence and remember the good news he’s brought to you in your story? How might these reminders change your engagement with others?
Application
- Slow down. Make the time to be still and listen for God’s gentle whisper.
- Pay attention. Be on the lookout for small, unexpected ways God might be showing up in your life whether through a conversation, Scripture, quiet, nature (and more).
- Remember who God uses. Unassuming people in unexpected ways. Be open to how he might use you to encourage or serve someone this week. Or, how someone might show up for you.
