Introduction
God’s love comes alive through His messengers – angels, prophets, and even ordinary people – who shared the news of Jesus’ birth. But this message isn’t just for them; it’s for everyone. During this Advent series, we’ll find how God invites us to step out in faith and obedience as a messenger of hope in a world that needs it. In week three, Pastor John shared the story of Simeon – a man who faithfully awaited and recognized Jesus’ arrival.
Discussion
1. Revisit and read Luke 2:25-35. What stands out to you about Simeon’s character and actions in this passage?
2. Simeon experienced peace and contentment because of his obedience. Where in your life could obedience to God actually bring more peace – and maybe even contentment? Keep your answer(s) in mind as you go to the next question.
3. Revisit and read Matthew 1:24-25 and Luke 1:38. Joseph and Mary’s obedience required them to act without knowing the full picture or outcome. If you were obedient to what you just shared in the previous question, what’s unknown or unclear in that step? How is that reality likely to impact how you think, pray, or act upon it?
4. Simeon was described as righteous, devout, and Spirit-led. It may feel funny to apply these to yourself, but give it a try - do you recognize any of these qualities in you right now? Why or why not? What practices would help you stay sensitive to God’s leading, personally? We’ll apply one specific practice in the next question.
5. Remember, God’s nudges will never contradict his Word. How can you prioritize regular Scripture reading in your life so you can better discern God’s direction?
Application
- Get familiar. Spend time with God in his Word and in conversation with him. By reading and praying with him regularly, you will become more familiar with his voice and better able to notice his leading in your life.
- Practice obedience. Obedience to God is not intuitive to us. It can be like a muscle that takes time, practice, and different kinds of exercises. So start simple. Do what God says in simple ways that will strengthen your faith, and obedience, or the future.
- Say thanks. Take time this week to reflect on when you’ve been blessed through obedience to God in the past. Thank him for his faithfulness then and use these examples to remind yourself of his faithfulness now.
