You weren’t designed to run on empty. God invites you to stop, pause, and be with Him—not out of obligation, but because he knows what your soul truly needs. This week, we’re looking at Retreat—an intentional, extended time set apart to be with God so we can rest, hear his voice, and remain connected to him.
Discussion
1. When you think of the word retreat, what images or experiences come to mind? Have you ever taken time away for spiritual purposes? Share your experience together.
2. After hearing what retreat with God is like—be honest—are you interested? Does it feel like something you’ll actually try or make space in your schedule for? Why or why not?
3. Revisit and read Luke 5:15–16 and John 6:15. Were you aware of Jesus’ practice of going away to be with God? Why do you think he prioritized it, even amidst the important work he was doing?
3. Revisit and read John 15:1–8. What is this verse saying about your relationship with God? When you go out to do anything (literally anything), are you striving really hard to make it happen or beginning from resting in the reality of God’s grace? Describe your default approach.
4. Pastor Chip shared several benefits of retreat, like quieting the noise, hearing God’s voice, celebrating growth, discovering where to confess and repent, and freeing us from the need for approval and productivity. Which of these would be the biggest gift to you in your life right now. Why?
5. Say you started planning for a retreat in the next month—whether a few hours or a few days—what’s it going to take to make it happen? Is it a reminder, encouragement, permission, and/or planning? Talk it out with your group to see how you can actually give this a try.
Application
- Start planning. Use this overview doc to help take steps toward taking a retreat soon.
- It won’t be perfect. This takes practice. Don’t be surprised if/when it feels harder than it should or doesn’t meet your expectations. And don’t let it stop you from trying again.
- Expect results. Be ready for God to do something. He wants this time with and for you.
