Introduction
It's common for Iowans to think it's better to plan for the worst and be surprised if things go well. Why set yourself up for failure by hoping? When you choose to follow Jesus, hope is different than naivete, and the Bible has a lot to say about it. In week one, Pastor Jesse taught about our purpose – and the need for something strong enough to hold it up.
Discussion
1. If someone asked you what your purpose is right now, what would you say to them?
2. With your first answer in mind, what in your life might you be placing your purpose on these days that simply can’t hold up? Your job, family, passions, causes, approval, Jesus, or something else? What signs might there be that it’s not enough?
3. The only thing strong enough to hang our purpose on is the Word – what God revealed in Jesus and the Scriptures. When you do, you can have purpose no matter what. Practically, what do need for God’s Word to become what you hang your purpose on? Do you believe it will be enough right now? Why or why not?
4. Revisit and read Luke 5:1-11. Simon wasn’t just fishing, he was obeying. Your purpose is more about who you’re walking to than what you’re walking through. Have you ever recognized and been obedient to God in your everyday life – perhaps amidst your purpose? Share what that experience was like with your group.
5. Spend some time in the application section below to take some steps in hanging your purpose on God’s Word this week.
Application
- Make time for God’s Word. When will you spend time in the Bible - God’s Word - this week? The more specific you can be, the more likely it is you’ll actually do it. What will you plan to read? What can you do to help you anticipate and look forward to that time?
- Find purpose in God’s Word. Use the following prompts to help you find purpose as you read the Bible this week. Look for:
- A promise to trust.
- A command to obey.
- A truth to embrace.
- A warning to heed.
- An encouragement to rest in.
- Be obedient to God’s Word. Don’t be surprised by moments in your life that seem connected to what you’ve been reading and reflecting on in the Bible. Be ready to respond in obedience – to do what God says.
