The Church is at its best when every generation shows up - and shows up for each other. Growing young starts with a heart shift: from asking “What’s in it for me?” to “Who’s coming after me, and how can I help them see Jesus more clearly?”
Discussion
1. Revisit and read Luke 19:1-10. What stood out about the idea that somebody planted that tree long before Zacchaeus climbed it? Who has made it easier for you to see Jesus more clearly, and what did they do that shaped your faith?
2. Revisit and read Deuteronomy 6:5-9 and Psalm 78:4-6. How do these passages challenge or encourage you about your role in passing faith to the next generation? How does the truth that the church is always one generation away from dying out affect your perspective?
3. Sometimes we hesitate to invest because we won’t see direct results or benefit. If you feel resistant, how might your heart need to shift? What do you need from Jesus and your group to help you?
4. If you’re ready to grow younger, what fears, doubts, or obstacles might hold you back? When you think about your time, energy, or influence, what’s one way you’ve used (or could use it) to help someone else see Jesus more clearly?
5. Pastor John challenged us to ask, “Who is next, and what is my responsibility?” So, who is next for you - kids, students, coworkers, neighbors? And what are you responsible for this week?
Application
- Shift Your Focus. Start each day by asking, “Who can I encourage or serve today to help them see Jesus more clearly?” and be intentional about looking beyond your own needs.
- Invest Faithfully. Find one specific way this week to invest your time, energy, or resources in someone’s faith - whether it’s a conversation, a text, an act of service, or showing up for them.
- Serve Humbly. Look for ways to support or encourage the next generation - at church, at home, or in your community - without needing recognition, trusting God to grow what you start.
